There are a wide range of reasons as to why we exercise and train.  Often these are for the here and now – events, to fit into a dress/suit or to get ready for a holiday/wedding.  Short to medium term gains are cleary very important but long term gains are probably even more so.

Exercise, along with a healthy diet, adequate and good quality sleep, social interaction, being an ideal weight to one’s height and not engaging in regular risky behaviours such as smoking or excessive drinking are the indicators for not just a long life but a healthy life – live better for longer.

Different types of exercise impacts on different physical parameters, which have distinct health benefits.

Strength is generated with so called resistance training or weight training.  Strength training will increase the size of muscles but also increase the density of other musculoskeletal tissues such as bone, tendon, ligament, cartilage and connective tissue.

If done well, with skill and control, it will also enhance your ability to activate your muscles.  These gains will enable you to move better against forces such as gravity for longer, make you more robust, help regulate your blood glucose levels, fit your clothes better, throw your son in the air for longer into his life and help you live not only longer but better.  It is recommended that we all strength training on a regular basis for such gains.
